The bead positions in the abacus now match the word 101. In the same way, to feed in a word like 1011, we would slide one heaven bead down to the crossbar in the first and second columns, leave the beads in the third at the top of the frame, and bring one bead in the fourth down to the crossbar.

But the abacus was born for computing, not for registering numbers. So, suppose we try a simple binary calculation. Let’s add the two-bit word 11 to another two-bit word, 10. We begin by feeding in either of the two—11, say. After clearing the abacus by sliding all the heaven beads to the top of the frame, we bring one heaven bead down to the crossbar in the first column, and another down to the crossbar in the second. That completes the feed-in of the 11 word:
